A slow gurgle from the laundry sink. Water pooling across the yard after rain.

Both point to the same story on this side of the plateau: bush blocks, sandstone ridges and tree roots that never stop hunting for a way into old pipework.

This is one of the highest, leafiest pockets in Sydney, sitting right on the edge of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.

Most homes here are detached houses built through the 1960s to 1980s boom, with newer infill tucked onto steeper bushland lots since.

Thick tree cover along the park boundary is the single biggest reason root-choked drains turn up on quiet streets in this area.

Sudden downpours off the sandstone slopes send more water than older stormwater pits were built for, so grates and gullies back up fast.

Streets like Excalibur Close and Lancelot Street sit deep in the bushland pockets, where slope and root pressure both come into play at once.

Neither problem is unusual on its own. A single root intrusion or a silted-up pit is a normal call-out anywhere in Sydney.
